Daniel Negreanu Crowned as the Poker Player of the Decade

Daniel Negreanu who is currently a member of the PokerStars Pro team has gained recognition as the best poker player of the decade by an independent poker ranking agency called Global Poker Index or GPI. This recognition from GPI has been followed by Negreanu’s outstanding performance in 2013. Negranu has won several major poker tournaments and received the prestigious ‘Player of the Year’ award from several different agencies.

Negreanu is among the most popular players in the world and has had the distinction of being the youngest poker player ever to take part and win the WSOP bracelet in 1998 at the age of 23. Since then, he has worked very hard to consistently win several major poker tournaments and compete against some of the best players in the world to become the most successful poker players today.

Life and career

Negranu was born in Canada, Ontario in 1974 to a Romanian family. Daniel Negranu was a highly ambitious person even as a kid and always dreamed of getting rich quickly. He was introduced to poker for the first time when he was aspiring a career in snooker at the age of 15. By 16 he was a regular playing poker in various card rooms where he was also involved in sports betting. Negranu was short of a few credits in high school when he dropped out to take up poker as a profession at charity casinos.

Negranu moved to Las Vegas at the age of 22 after collecting enough bankroll by playing at several charity casinos in Toronto. However, he wasn’t very successful and had to return home to build his bankroll. He made a spectacular entry into many poker tournaments in 1997 and amassed three wins, two of which came from World Poker Finals where was named as the tournament’s best ‘all-round player’. In 1998 he won his first WSOP bracelet and since then has gone on to claim six more to his name. He has also won two WPT championship titles and has also been named as the WPT player of the year in 2004-05. He has the unique distinction of being the only poker player in the history of WSOP to win the WSOP player of the year title more than once making him the most deserving person for the player of the decade title.

2013 for Negranu

2013 was among the most successful years for Daniel Negranu as of now. He not only dominated the tables but won several tournaments facing a plethora of seasoned professionals. Negranu’s dedication towards his game was very clear since he was a teenager . From hiring a professional trainer to becoming a vegan, Negranu has showed absolute commitment towards his game and the result is that he has crushed a majority of the tournaments he participated in. Negranu has attributed his new found success to the ChoiceCenter Leadership University in a YouTube video. Negranu has confirmed to have taken up Personal Development and other Leadership courses from the University which focuses on experiential learning to help improve his emotional intelligence.

Armed with his renewed confidence, Negranu not only proved that he is the most successful poker player but has also achieved success in life. Negranu began 2013 with his television debut on the Millionaire Matchmaker where single millionaires are matched with potential life partners. He also went on to appear on a Canadian sitcom Mr. D. This is the first extensive acting role in Negreanu’s career compared to his numerous cameos. Negreanu is also one of the biggest philanthropists in the Poker community and he has always helped out to clean the poker community’s image through his generosity. In 2013 he helped raise $100,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and pledged his match donations up to $50,000 for the cause. He was able to raise over a whopping $173,000 for the hospital.

Poker highlights

Negreanu’s lifetime winnings from playing live poker tournaments amount to about $19.4 million placing him third in the list of all time poker winnings. His success over the past decade has been a clear indication of his skill as a poker player. On winning the player of the decade award, Negreanu said that he has always been working hard throughout his carreer to win consistently against a competition that is getting tougher by the day. He also said that he never wanted to live on his name and has always wanted to win. He said that the game has undergone many changes in the past decade but the key factor for success is confidence, which has always remained constant. Negreanu is looking forward to the next decade to be a much more confident player than before.

The player of the decade award is cherry on the cake in Negreanu’s illustrious career which includes several awards such as the Card Player Poker Player of the Year, the Bluff Magazine Poker Player of the Year and WSOP Poker Player of the year. He also finished 2013 the number one poker player in the GPI rankings. So you can say that Daniel Negranu is not only the best player of the decade but he is also the best poker player at present. Some of Negreanu’s highlights of the previous year include winning the main event at the WSOP Asia-Pacific and making the final table at another, the European Poker Tour Grand Final Main event final table, Winning the World Series of Poker Europe High Roller tournament to win a total of over $3 million from live tournaments.
